Description
:
Perched
on a
precipitous
ledge
overlooking
Wissahickon
Gorge
in
Fairmount
Park
,
Fingerspan
is
a
sculpture
which
serves
as a
pedestrian
bridge
.
It
consists
of a
weathered
steel
frame
made
of
perforated
steel
plate
,
forming
a
slightly
bent
finger
. A
curved
metal
plate
over
the
entrance
to
one
side
of the
bridge
was
cut
in the
shape
of a
fingernail
.
Fingerspan
is
situated
in a
densely
wooded
area
.
According
to
Pinto
, 'The
whole
concept
behind
the
using
of the
form
of a
finger
has to
do
with
physicality
and the
body...In
the
design
of
Fingerspan
you
pass
through
something
that
is
shaped
actually
like
an
armored
finger
. In
passing
through
that
finger
,
you
go
through
the
joints
so
that the
public
becomes
the
muscle
or the
bone
marrow
of that
finger..
. The
span
is
all
about
traveling
, the
means
that
it
takes
to
get
from
one
point
to
another.
