Description
: The
design
concept
for the
sculpture
is
a
ceremonial
archway
developed
within
the
tradition
of the
grand
entrance
portal
,
stressing
the
identity
of the
complex
and the
symbolic
act
of
entrance
and
passage.
Not to be
seen
as a
sculpture
in
isolation
,
it
is
rather
a
structure
that
is
interrelated
with the
architectural
and
landscape
scheme
, with the
sensibility
to
human
or
pedestrian
environment.
The
architectural
scale
is
addressed
by the
proportion
of the
archway
as
it
lines
up
with the
major
horizontal
banding
of the
building
at the
20-foot
level.
The
placement
is
in
line
with the
facade
of the
building
, and
visually
determines
the
major
entrance
as
well.
Because
of this
placement
,
small
pedestrian
plazas
are
created
at the
base
of the
archway.
These
areas
create
a
personal
pedestrian
experience
,
thus
forming
an
association
with the
complex.
The
geometric
clarity
of the
archway
relates
to the
architectural
detailing
of the
building
, and at the
same
time
the
focus
and
accent
of the
space
relates
to the
curvilinear
,
stylized
ribbon
shapes
seen
as a
visual
counterpoint.
This
interplay
of
forms
visually
defines
and
emphasizes
the
entrance
to
pedestrian
, as
well
as
vehicular
,
traffic.
