Description
:
Five
weathered
granite
boulders
were
chosen
by the
artist
from a
nearby
arroyo
and then
placed
along
a
pathway
which
leads
into the
Sandria
Mountains
.
Walters
altered
the
stones
subtly
with
carved
and
inlaid
symbols
to
memorialize
the
life
and
environmental
concerns
of
conservationist
Phil
Tollefsrud
. The
sculpture
is
situated
along
a
pathway
which
affords
spectacular
views
of the
city
of
Albuqerque
below
and the
brooding
Sandia
Mountains
above
.
One
rock
has
38
copper
rods
inserted
into a
small
carved
circular
area
at
chest
height
to the
viewer
. These
rods
note
Tollefsrud's
age
at the
time
of his
death
.
Each
of the
remaining
four
rocks
bears
an
abstract
representation
of '
naturalness
' and '
open
space
',
according
to the
artist
.
Project
History
: This
artwork
occupies
the
entrance
to the
Elena
Gallegos
Land
Grant
. The
work
is
dedicated
to the
memory
of
local
conservationist
Phil
Tollefsrud
,
who
was
instrumental
in the
formation
of the
Open
Space
Task
Force
designed
to
foster
open
spaces
for
Albuquerque
.
Tollefsrud
died
at
age
38
in
1976
. The
city
of
Albuquerque
Percent-for-Art
Program
,
created
in
1978
,
funded
this
local
artist
whose
proposal
was
chosen
from
among
75
others
submitted
.
