Description
: The
artist
, with
Anderson/Schwartz
Architects
,
created
a
skeletal
gateway
,
inspired
by
topiary
garden
structures
.
It
features
tall
,
intricately
detailed
stainless-steel
legs
,
brass
fixtures
topped
by a
lightning
rod
,
bronze
spheres
and a
stainless
steel
windsock
and '
whirligig
'.
Rector
Gate
is
a
45-foot-high
arch
set
at the
intersection
of
Rector
Place
and the
Esplanade
. Its
vertical
brushed
stainless-steel
legs
are
set
in
Canadian
black
granite
.
Encasing
the
legs
are
perforated
stainless-steel
panels
and
doughnut-like
rings
. The
horizontal
truss
of
intricate
stainless-steel
connections
supports
a
red
brass
fixture
topped
by a
lightning
rod
and a
stainless
steel
torchere
that
is
lit
up
at
night
.
Atop
the
northern
tower
are
three
spun
bronze
spheres
and a
lightning
rod
. On the
southern
tower
are
ornamental
objects
,
including
a
stainless
steel
windsock
and a '
whirligig
'
topped
by a
gold-plated
globe
and
lightning
rod
.
Project
History
: The
Battery
Park
City's
Fine
Arts
Program
was
established
in
February
1982
.
It
was
intended
to
complement
the
site's
acclaimed
architecture
and
public
spaces
with
appropriate
and
significant
works
of
art
, to
enhance
the
public
environment
and the
enjoyment
of
people
working
and
living
at
Battery
Park
City
. The
Program
was
conceived
as a
parallel
to the
Percent-for-Art
policies
adopted
by
New
York
City
as a
means
to
acquire
works
of
arts
for
public
areas
. The
Battery
Park
City
Fine
Arts
Committee
is
an
independent
group
of
professionals
from the
art
and
architecture
communities
,
who
serve
pro
bono
. The
Committee
advises
Battery
Park
City
Authority
(BPCA)
by
recommending
appropriate
sites
for
works
of
public
art
and
artists
to
create
unique
works
for these
locations
. The
Program
is
financed
by
revenues
BPCA
receives
from its
lease
agreements
with
private
developers
who
are
building
at
Battery
Park
City
.
