Project
Description
: This
artwork
consists
of
36
stones
placed
in
rows
to
form
an
arrowhead
shape
.
It
relates
to an
ancient
burial
ground
nearby
, and
refers
to the
natural
history
of the
area
. The
artist
assembled
glacial
boulders
from a
local
quarry
and
placed
them in
rows
. The
largest
stone
,
weighing
approximately
11
tons
,
is
isolated
at the
narrow
end
of the
triangular
park
.
Two
smaller
stones
form
the '
second
'
row
;
each
subsequent
row
is
formed
by
ever
smaller
stones
.
It
was
Andre's
intention
to '
secularize
some
of the
serenity
of the
graveyard
',
referring
to an
adjacent
graveyard
.
Andre's
use
of
stone
provides
a
sense
of
natural
history
, a
connection
to
early
geologic
periods
--
perhaps
a
way
of
suggesting
that
human
habitation
of the
planet
, and
civilization
as
we
know
it
, are
very
recent
phenomena
.
Project
History

Arts
provided
matching
funds
. The
public
response
to this
piece
became
an
issue
in that
year's
mayoral
campaign
:
it
was
criticized
for
costing
too
much
money
, and
it
divided
opinion
on what
constituted
'
good
'
art
.
Over
the
years
the
artwork
has
won
acceptance
.
It
is
