Description
: This
sculpture
consists
of
five
upright
marble
slabs
,
each
eight
feet
tall
, and
arranged
like
spokes
in a
semicircle
.
It
is
located
on an
island
in a
lagoon
at the
center
of
Cortez
Park
, and
can
be
reached
by
way
of a
footbridge
. The
green-edged
laminated
glass
,
fitted
into
slots
in the
stone
,
catches
the
blazing
desert
sunlight
in
different
ways
all
day
. The
island
plaza
area
,
upon
which
the
rocks
stand
,
provides
a
concrete
wall
for
visitor
seating
. The
effect
is
of a
quiet
mini-environment
set
within
the
very
active
surrounding
park
. The
arc
arrangement
of
Rigan's
work
faces
due
south
.
Project
History
:
Financing
for the
project
came
through
the
Phoenix
Arts
Commission's
Percent-for-Art
Program
, and was
generated
by the
Phoenix
Parks
,
Recreation
and
Library
Department
.
Additional
funding
came
from the
city's
Water
and
Wastewater
Department
. The
initial
piece
of
stone
for this
work
weighed
17
tons
, and was
cut
at the
quarry
into the
five
pieces
.
Rigan
used
laser-guided
diamond-edged
saws
to
cut
the
slots
where
glass
was to be
inlaid
.
Rigan
minimized
the
amount
of
glass
to
make
the
sculpture
less
vulnerable
to
vandalism
.
