Project
Description
: This
50-foot
long
sculpture
consists
of
two
square
10-foot
[high]
concrete
tunnels
that
intersect
to
form
an '
X
'.
Above
and
below
the
center
point
is
a
20-foot
shaft
with a
supported
grate
so
that the
viewer
can
stand
and
contemplate
him-
or
herself
as the
center
of the
universe
. The
entire
piece
is
built
of
pale
grey
concrete
.
Upon
entering
the
work
from the
usually
blazing
sunlight
outside
,
one's
eyes
adjust
slowly
to the
subtleties
of the
controlled
interior
lighting
. The
artwork
is
sited
in a
walkway
area
at the
end
of
Yale
Blvd
. Its
design
echoes
the
New
Mexico
state
symbol
of the
Zia
Indians
'
sun
sign
,
which
features
four
arms
representing
north
,
east
,
west
and
south
.
Project
History
: This
sculpture
has been
very
controversial
within
the
University
of
New
Mexico
community
,
because
of its
bunker-like
shape
and
semi-private
interior
space
.
