Notes	[The Altar of San Ambrogio is frequently called the 'Paliotto' or altar frontal. However it is a complete altar, not an altar frontal, as well as being the tomb of St. Ambrose of Milan. Plaques on front of altar: Ottonian. Plaques on back and side of altar: Carolingian. Some authorities consider the altar to be Romanesque, but this less generally accepted.]
Technique/Process	sculpture, metalworking, repouse, enameling, niello
Materials/Medium	gold, silver, enamel, precious and semi-precious stones. Wood frame with attached repousse plaques banded by box-enamels. Front plaques are gold. Back and side plaques are gilded silver. Inscription on back of altar is niello.
