Project
Location
:
Woodland
Park
Zoo
(near
the
African
Savanna)
,
Seattle
,
WA
Project
Description
: The
designer
constructed
a
cluster
of
large
boulders
surrounding
a
small
plaza
.
People
can
climb
on the
rocks
to
get
a
better
view
of the
animals
,
which
are
located
in a
natural
savanna-like
enclosure
. The
work
fits
in a
space
approximately
20
by
15
feet
.
One
of the
larger
boulders
is
heated
, a
metaphor
for '
hot
rock-n-roll.
'
Similar
heated
rocks
are
used
in the
lion
area
to
keep
the
lions
warm
.
Project
History
:
KZOK
, a
Seattle
radio
station
,
spearheaded
a
fundraising
drive
to
honor
Jimi
Hendrix
, a
native
of
Seattle
who
became
an
internationally
recognized
rock
musician
.
Hendrix's
career
ended
early
when
he
died
tragically
of a
drug
overdose
.
KZOK
, with
assistance
from the
Seattle
Arts
Commission
,
organized
a
juried
competition
to
select
an
artist
to
design
the
memorial
.
Many
park
sites
were
considered
and
rejected
.
Controversy
emerged
over
whether
it
was
appropriate
to
honor
a
teenage
idol
who
used
drugs
.
However
, the
former
Director
of the
Woodland
Park
Zoo
,
David
Hancocks
,
felt
that a
location
at the
Zoo
could
be
found
. The
Zoo
location
also
solved
a
potential
vandalism
problem
because
of its
increased
security
.
Seven
proposals
were
submitted
by
local
artists
and
designers
. The
finalist
was
Larry
Buckingham
, a
landscape

from
Seattle
